Online Photo, Bookmark, Data Sharing and Tagging - del.icio.us

There are many Web 2.0 applications that involve sharing files, photos, bookmarks, audio -- or even just storing those files as a backup in case your computer or website crashes. Some of these sites also allow folksonomy (collaborative tagging).

Folksonomy is a user-generated taxonomy used to categorize and retrieve Web pages, photographs, Web links and other web content using open ended labels called tags. It improves searches by allowing users to label information with their own language.

  • X-Drive - 5 gB storage free - allows sharing - requires AOL IM logon
  • Orbitfiles - 6 gB storage free - allows sharing - movies, mp3s, any data
  • Flickr - store and display photos - tag photos for sharing and join topical photo groups
  • del.icio.us - store and share bookmarks - great for web collections - tag web pages

del.icio.us

A great tool for sharing lists of web sites. For example, see this List of Top 100 Tools for Learning!

  • Keep track of bookmarks for yourself
  • Create lists of relevant links for your students (and share them!)
  • See what other people are bookmarking
  • Send your students on a web quest to research a specific topic. Give them a tag name specific to your class to label all their bookmarked resources.
